Investigating what makes people walk or cycle using a socio-ecological approach in seven European cities

چکیده
Large efforts and investments have been made into public transport, walking, cycling in cities around Europe. Yet, cars remain the most ubiquitous mode of travel urban areas. Often, research barriers facing active evaluates only one part problem, such as a person’s surrounding environment (the macro level), socially embedded practices that define activity (meso or own beliefs sense identity (micro level). However, enablers to exist on multiple levels, interventions increase walking and/or are less likely work when implemented isolation. Hence, multilevel socio-ecological model is developed demonstrate test importance assessing these together, identify interrelationships among them. Using Physical Activity Through Sustainable Transportation Approaches (PASTA) dataset behaviour people seven different European cities, this paper identifies constructs correlate with most. Within PASTA, psychosocial influence decision take trip by bicycle walk more than built variables. In addition, purpose meso level attitudinal variables explaining travel. These relationships do not vary significantly between cities. This further supports use multi-faceted cycling, rather focussing single policy.

What makes cities complex ?
Schrödinger’s view of life and his suggestion that “Organization is maintained by extracting 'order' from the environment” in fact anticipated the notion of order out of chaos that has become the motto of complexity theory. And indeed, three decades later, in December 8, 1977, Ilia Prigogine (1977) in his Nobel lecture demonstrated that in certain circumstances matter too behave as if it has li...

Mysterious culture: Some online social networks evolve a distinct culture and iconography, like ancient Egypt, only more rapidly. (Photo: Guillaume Lelarge/Wikimedia Commons.) A mysterious new culture has been born. “We are like ancient Egyptians. We communicate with pictures, we worship cats, and nobody understands us.” This paraphrases a post that was reblogged many thousands of times on the ...
متن کاملWhat makes ecological systems reactive?
Although perturbations from a stable equilibrium must ultimately vanish, they can grow initially, and the maximum initial growth rate is called reactivity. Reactivity thus identifies systems that may undergo transient population surges or drops in response to perturbations; however, we lack biological and mathematical intuition about what makes a system reactive. This paper presents upper and l...
متن کاملSocio-Economic Segregation in European Capital Cities
Growing inequalities in Europe, even in the most egalitarian countries, are a major challenge threatening the sustainability of urban communities and the competiveness of European cities. Surprisingly, though, there is a lack of systematic and representative research on the spatial dimension of rising inequalities. This gap is filled by our book project Socio-Economic Segregation in European Ca...
متن کاملSocial Support, Socio-Economic Status, Health and Abuse among Older People in Seven European Countries
BACKGROUND Social support has a strong impact on individuals, not least on older individuals with health problems. A lack of support network and poor family or social relations may be crucial in later life, and represent risk factors for elder abuse. This study focused on the associations between social support, demographics/socio-economics, health variables and elder mistreatment. METHODS Th...
